Hanson storms to stunning victory in Motocaddy Masters
Oliver Churcher - Friday, June 17, 2011

Chris Hanson produced a sensational final round of 63 (-7) to win the Motocaddy Masters at Bovey Castle in Devon.
Hanson started the day four shots behind overnight leaders Dale Marmion and Graham Benson but Hanson's 63, the lowest round by any golfer on the PGA EuroPro Tour so far this season, took him to the title.
His flawless round included birdies at the second, third, tenth, 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th and left him as clubhouse leader and sweating on the outcome.
Marmion on -9 was the only man who could catch him but could only manage to shoot par at the last nine holes as Hanson won the competition and the £10,000 prize by one shot.
Hanson (Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield) has had great success at Bovey Castle as he also won there in 2006 and was a day one leader in 2007 before finishing third.
This is his first EuroPro Tour victory in five years, although he came close in 2009 when he had a five-shot lead going into the last day at Collingtree Park, Northamptonshire, but a horror final round of 81 left him in tied eighth.
"I'm a much better golfer now than I was five years ago," said Hanson. "I've matured as a golfer, have a full-time caddy and have got a really good team around me. I've just really matured and focused."
"After those mess ups I've had on final days it's nice to be able to put them all to bed now. Collingtree Park was a massive upset for me and knocked me off balance. I had some time off the EuroPro Tour so to come back and win is absolutely great.
"I think my chances of making the Challenge Tour are really high. I've played well in the first two events. But I want to get on the main tour and will just keep doing what I'm doing.
"I played fantastically today and controlled my golf ball the best I've ever done. I just stuck to my gameplan and it seemed to work.
"It's strange waiting to see if you've won as I was told Dale needed to chip in for a play-off but ten minutes later I still didn't know. I went to hit a few balls and then someone told me, but you don't feel you have won until you have the trophy.
"I knew how tough the course is but I didn't think I would have to shoot seven-under to put the pressure on so hats off to Dale as well."
Marmion, who shot 68 (-2) on Friday, was quick to congratulate Hanson. "I have to give credit where it's due and it was an unbelievable round from Chris, -7 in those conditions," said Marmion.
"I thought me shooting -2 would have been enough but unfortuantely it wasn't. But overall I'm happy with how I played and there are plenty of positives to take from it. Second isn't too bad a finish."
Gareth Evans (Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury) was in third on -6, while James Ruth, Ed Wood (Crow Wood, Glasgow) and Nick James (Wenvoe Castle, Cardiff) all finished in tied fourth on -5.
The action from Bovey Castle will be broadcast on June 29 and the next EuroPro Tour event is at Longhirst Hall, Northumberland from June 22 to 24.

Wolstenholme wins using Motocaddy S3 trolley!
Oliver Churcher - Friday, July 02, 2010

LEGENDARY amateur golfer Gary Wolstenholme has clinched his first ever professional title.
Wolstenholme, who turns 50 next month, won the latest PGA EuroPro tour event - The Stoke-By-Nayland Championship 2010 in Essex.
Awarded an MBE in 2007 for his services to golf, Wolstenholme won 218 caps for England, played in the Walker Cup six times and helped win the World Amateur Team Championship in 1998. He only turned professional in 2008 aged 48 and hopes this victory proves the springboard to more success.
“It feels great,” said a delighted Wolstenholme, who collects £10,000 after he finished four shots ahead of James Busby and Brendan McCarroll. “It still hasn’t sunk in but the really nice thing is that all the hard work has paid off. Although I’ve played well recently, I’ve not been scoring well so to go out there and have three decent rounds and win a tournament by four shows that work has paid off. Winning this tournament is certainly up there with the other things I’ve achieved. The fact I’ve achieved so much as an amateur doesn’t matter as in effect you’re back to square one as all of a sudden you’re playing for your living."
Gary recently took receipt of a brand new Motocaddy S3 Digital with Lithium battery and it is great to see his new gear paying dividends! Congratulations from Motocaddy!

Gaunt holds off pack to win Motocaddy Masters
Oliver Churcher - Wednesday, May 05, 2010

Daniel Gaunt on the 18th with the winner's trophy
Daniel Gaunt survived a tricky start and a raft of final round challengers to win The Motocaddy Masters at Wensum Valley Hotel Golf and Country Club by five shots at ten under par.
Gaunt began the day three shots clear at seven under par but he bogeyed three of his first six holes to add pressure to his run down the back nine, with Michael Collins shooting 68 earlier in the day to lead in the clubhouse at four under.
After his second round the Australian said there were plenty of chances on the back nine and that proved vital as he picked up four birdies from the 12th and finished in the grand manner with an eagle at the last to card a final round 69, finishing ten under for the tournament – six under for his last seven holes – and five shots clear of Dale Marmion and Andrew Johnston who tied for second place.
“Winning the first event is very big,” said Gaunt, who pockets a cheque for £10,000 for the win. “Topping the Order of Merit at any stage is good and it gives me momentum for the rest of the Tour.”
While other players lost their cool down the back nine and their challenges fell away, the 31 year-old claimed the title by taking his chances on the final stretch – something he put down to a new patient attitude.
“I’ve been working on keeping calm on the course as I’ve lost my temper in the past – that win was all down to patience,” said Gaunt. “I didn’t play badly on the front nine but I missed a few little putts and that caused me to drop shots. Perhaps in the past that might have affected me, but I kept patient because I knew a strong back nine would see me home.
“In 2005, Andrew Marshall chipped in at 18 here to pip me to the title so today is a little bit of revenge for that too!”
Marmion (Eaton GC) led the tournament after the first round but had to settle for a share of second spot. The 2008 Order of Merit runner-up appeared in trouble when four bogeys and a solitary birdie to the tenth saw him drop to level par for the tournament, but five birdies down the rest of the back nine was the strong finish his opening round of 65 deserved.
Johnston (North Middlesex) enjoyed a similar flourish on the back nine as he shot a final round 69 to share the spoils of second spot with Marmion. He moved to two under after the fifth but cancelled those shots out by the tenth. Birdies at 14 and 16 moved him to four under for the round before a vital birdie at the last pulled him up to five under.
By the time Gaunt teed off, a number of players had moved into contention and it was Michael Collins who held the most hope in the clubhouse. Collins (foreireland.com) began the day at level par and was one under through 15 before a grandstand finish of three birdies saw him set the bar at four under. John Spagnuolo was another player who sped up the field thanks to a back nine flourish, carding a three under 69 after sitting at one over through the 12th before picking up four birdies to join Collins in a three-way tie for fourth. Paul O’Hanlon (Curragh) completed that trio, left to rue a double bogey at the sixth on his way to a final round of 71.
Kieran Staunton succumbed to a similar fate as he was forced to take a drop on the 16th, leading to a double bogey. Staunton (Woodcote Park) was two under par to that point – four under for the tournament – but that blemish cost him in the final count, although a birdie at 17 did see him shoot 71 to finish in a tie for seventh. James Hepworth (Ilkley GC) and Jeremy Kavanagh (Stoke Park) join Staunton in seventh, with Hepworth matching Staunton’s 71 and Kavanagh going one better with a 70.
Paul Maddy was in the ninth pair to go out and his 68 turned into a significant marker for the final day. Maddy (Gog Magog) kicked off at two over and dropped a shot on the first but he was sitting pretty in the clubhouse at two under as the leading groups dropped early shots – Maddy birdying the seventh, 12th and 13th before finishing birdie-birdie to sit at two under.
Maddy was joined in a four-way tie for tenth spot by Gary King (Tyrrells Wood) and Matthew Mills (Wentworth) who both shot rounds of 70, and a disappointed Matt Allen, who bogeyed the last two holes to finish level for the day and two under for the tournament.
The second event on the 2010 PGA EuroPro Tour takes place at Burhill GC in Surrey from May 26-28.
